How-To Do A Speed Test

Here are the correct procedures to do a speed test:

  1. Restart your computer and connect directly to the RJ45 wall jack.
  2. CLOSE all programs and make sure that no other programs or applications are running in the background and accessing the internet.
  3. Open a single browser window and go to www.speedtest.net.
  4. Go to the speedtest.net website settings (upper right corner) and then:
  5. Change the timezone to UTC+3
  6. Change the Speed Measurement to megabits
  7. Change the preferred server the CHICAGO server (FDC or ServerCentral)
  8. Click on SAVE at bottom of the page
  9. Click on Take a Speed Test in upper right of page
  10. Click on BEGIN TEST (to Preferred Server)
  11. You will now see your speed test results displayed
  12. Click on SHARE THIS RESULT
  13. Click on the COPY button
  14. Now paste these results into a service ticket or email back to support

How to interpret the results:

  • You should see PING (latency) of approximately 250ms.  If you see a much higher result it may be indication that you have other applications running in the background that may be accessing the internet at the same time that you are doing your speed tests.
  • Your Download speed multiply the results by 1000 to convert from Mbps to Kbps.  The download should be at or above the BASE SPEED for your service plan.  Upload is generally a little lower then the download.

Considerations:

  • Run several tests over period of an hour or more to get best idea of actual speeds.
  • Personal routers can significantly influence the outcome of the speed tests.
  • Why CHICAGO??  You are provided service through a VPN tunnel from Chicago to your location - that is why you have a US-based IP address instead of an Iraqi IP address.

What to do if you are not getting at least your BASE SPEEDS for your service plan:

  • Run several speed as indicated above and copy and paste the results into an email addressed to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
  • This email goes directly into our automated service ticket system and we will respond to you directly via email
  • Make sure in your email you include your location information (site / building or pod / room) and a local contact number if available for us to assist you further
